Shaw began her career as a newspaper reporter and has worked for such dailies as The St. Petersburg Times and The Tennessean. She was a features editor for Southern Living Inc. and served as a public relations officer for the College of William & Mary and Vanderbilt University. Her work has appeared in academic journals, national magazines such as Columbia Journalism Review and Creative Ideas for Living, and regional periodicals like Southern Accents.
